BC Museums Association - Indigenous Resources
In early 2020, Animikii had the privilege of collaborating with the BC Museums Association (BCMA) to develop a new subdomain to support the national call for repatriation, encouraging all publicly-funded institutions to work with Indigenous stakeholders to repatriate any human remains in their collections, as defined in the Rod Naknakim Declaration.
Founded in 1957, the British Columbia Museums Association creates a bright future for British Columbia’s museum, gallery, and related heritage communities through networking, advocacy, innovation, and professional development. It delivers programs and services to the benefit of its members and the sector at large, acting as the cultural and heritage information hub for British Columbia while providing a unified voice for the institutions, trustees, and professional staff and volunteers.
The BCMA’s Brain offers a collection of resources for Indigenous communities, cultural centres and museums as well as non-Indigenous museums, galleries and cultural organizations who wish to strengthen their relationships with Indigenous communities. This platform exists in conjunction with the BCMA’s Indigenous Advisory Committee who provides guidance and support by acknowledging injustices between museums and Indigenous communities, and actively works to build stronger relationships and partnerships and to decolonize museological practices.
