Metis Nation of BC, Learn Michif

Animikii’s history with MNBC and learnmichif.com is a partnership nearly as old as Animikii itself. We are not shy about our commitment to Indigenous Language Revitalization and redesigning this website really has allowed us to see the progression of how technology can be used in innovative ways for language learning. Being able to redesign this site had all the feelings of a legacy project; meaningful, powerful, and lasting the tests of time.

LearnMichif.com was created by Jeff Ward of Animikii in early 2003 as he saw the need for online Michif language instruction and built a basic web page based on the existing body of work done by Norman Fleury, Peter Bakker, Heather Souter, Pemmican Publications and many others. Now a few updates later, this site is the result of a collaborative project between the Metis Nation of British Columbia and the Metis Youth British Columbia. LearnMichif provides easy-to-follow content designed to engage and connect Metis people (and non-metis visitors!) with their past, future and culture through their language.

LearnMichif was created with funding from the Canadian Culture On-Line Project, a division of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
